Dr. Bullitt is a board-certified neurosurgeon who joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1984 following 2 years in private practice. She was Acting Chief of the Division of UNC Neurosurgery 1989-1990.

In 2002 Dr. Bullitt left clinical practice to devote full time to research. She heads the UNC Computer-Assisted Surgery and Imaging Laboratory (CASILab), a multidisciplinary research group that focuses upon image-guided surgery and computer-assisted diagnosis. Dr. Bullitt married Dr. Allan Friedman in 1984. They have three children.
